Serene Home at the Edge of Acadia

As the clients planned construction of a new home just outside the border of Acadia National Park, they wanted the building incorporated seamlessly into the existing landscape. LARK began by selecting a few of the granite boulders strewn around the site – glacial erratics deposited here by the Laurentian ice sheet – and having them sawn into natural-edge pavers for the paths and patios. Broad sweeps of bunchberry, low-bush blueberry, hay-scented fern and moss – our most characteristic native groundcovers – integrate the outdoor spaces with the surrounding ledge and blueberry barrens. Arrowwood, hobblebush, dogwood and red maple – all locally native trees and shrubs – were installed between the house and the public road, creating a foreground for views into the National Park. The project was featured in the October 2023 issue of Maine Home and Design.
